    Hair transplant in Turkey

Whether we lose hair as we get older or due to health issues, unhealthy diet, hormonal unbalances, or any other reason, having locks of hair fall off one’s head can be really frustrating.

Seldom do we think that our locks can be damaged and lost like all the other parts of our bodies. But the truth is that each one of us can look in the mirror one day and notice that his/ her hair’s golden era has come to an end.

The touch of full hair can be very gratifying and gives an incomparable boost of confidence for both men and women equally. That is why suffering from thinning hair or going partially (or completely) bald can trigger negative feelings and affect our self-esteem and the way we socialise with our peers, whether we like it or not.

However, we must look at the glass half full. Thanks to the impressive revolutionization of aesthetic procedures in Turkey, especially in the field of hair treatment and follicle implants, we can speak now about total hair makeovers that proved not only Turkish doctors’ ability to restore hair growth but also changed many people’s idea about travelling to Turkey to have hair transplantation procedures.

What may cause your hair to fall?

The problematic condition of losing hair drastically or even going bold is rooted in many reasons that may trigger or worsen the problem, including:

Harmful chemicals and excessive heat. For aesthetic reasons, men and women alike use chemical products or direct harmful degrees of heat to the scalp with the aim of straightening their hair. This might lead to losing hair over time.

Hereditary hair loss. The medical term for this pattern of hair loss is androgenic alopecia, and it is very common worldwide. People affected by this irregularity have inherited specific genes that inhibit the growth of hair and lead eventually to terminating the lifespan of the follicle.

Anaemia. Suffering from nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron deficiency, can play a major role in weakening hair follicles. If not treated, this blood irregularity can cause severe damage to the consistency and density of hair.

Hormonal changes during pregnancy and after childbirth. Carrying and nurturing a foetus is a stressful task both physically and mentally. Women go through substantial physiological and hormonal changes during this stage and after giving birth, which leads to losing hair temporarily or permanently in some cases.

Dandruff. This is one of the most common reasons for losing hair mass or suffering from thinning hair condition.

    What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant can be referred to as a hair restoration surgery, during which the surgeon moves healthy hair follicles from a donor area to the damaged zone, where hair started falling excessively or disappeared drastically.

Similarly, hair transplant surgery is a holistic medical technique used to treat baldness and hair loss in the scalp area, eyebrows, beard, and moustache.

As such, the donor area is considered convenient for cultivating follicles that will very likely reactivate hair growth in the area under treatment.

Specialists avoid hair follicles growing on top of the head and resort to the back or side of the scalp to harvest hair, since this particular zone is resistant to dihydrotestosterone (an androgen that causes baldness).

After transferring the hair follicles from the designated donor zone and implanting them in the hairline, for example, the hair continues its natural growth cycle because it can repel detrimental factors like inhibiting male hormones.

Patients undergoing this procedure can expect to recover over approximately six months. During this period, hair will grow gradually to replace falling follicles.

Can anyone have hair implant surgery in Turkey?

Even though this groundbreaking treatment is considered a definitive solution for baldness and severe hair shedding, not everyone is actually fit to undergo the surgery in Turkish clinics. Prior to the procedure, doctors attempt to conduct thorough physical and blood examinations to detect specific diseases and study the condition of hair in the cultivation area and the overall health of the skin in the implant area.

However, in specific cases, experts refrain from considering the procedure because it would either be unsuccessful or too risky. If you are thinking about having a hair transplant surgery in Turkey, read on to find out if it is right for you.

    The Seven ifs

    1. If you have a bad reaction to anaesthesia. Local or general anaesthesia is a focal step of hair transplantation surgery, which means that people who cannot handle or suffer from health issues that prevent them from being anaesthetised are not candidates for the procedure.
    2. If you are born without hair. The surgeon will need a donor area to harvest hair follicles, which is not possible in the total absence of hair growth on the scalp.
    3. If your blood doesn’t clot properly. A patient cannot have a hair transplant if he/she has haemophilia, which refers to a deficiency in the concentration of necessary clotting factors in one’s blood to stop bleeding.
    4. If you have a blood-transmitted illness. If a person tests positive for a blood-borne disease like Hepatitis C, Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV), or Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), he/ she cannot have hair transplant surgery under any circumstance.
    5. If you suffer from significant health issues. Those who live with chronic diseases like heart, kidney, or liver failure, as well as diabetes, cannot be considered fit candidates for transplant surgery due to numerous risks that can be life-threatening.
    6. If you are pregnant.  The surgeon will advise against having the hair transplant procedure while the patient is pregnant in order to avoid any potential complications that may be harmful to the mother and foetus. Instead the expert will recommend delaying the surgery after pregnancy to allow the patient to have a more comfortable recovery period.
    7. If the health of your scalp is inadequate. Having a fit scalp is vital for the success of the hair transplant in the sense that the doctor will need healthy hair follicles in the donor area to be transferred to an infection free transplantation zone. In effect, when the active flare-up of skin irregularities like psoriasis, lupus, or eczema go into remission the surgeon can do the procedure.

You may need a hair transplant if you notice these symptoms:

The phenomenon of losing hair excessively to the extent of going bald, for instance, can go through phases. In fact, the patient can experience one or more symptoms indicating that maybe it’s time to have hair implants.

    • Progressive thinning of hair on top of the scalp:

The factor of age plays a major role in the occurrence of this symptom, as people notice lighter levels of hair generally on top of the head. Women usually perceive a widening dimension of their natural part. Generally, men experience hair loss at the hairline on the forehead.

    •  Circles or patches of hairless spots:

In this case, bald spots in the circular or patchy shapes become visible and potentially accompanied by a feeling of itchiness and pain to a particular extent.

Techniques of hair transplant available in Turkey

Surgeons in Turkey use several techniques to conduct hair implant surgeries, including Direct Hair Implantation (DHI), Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI): The DHI method is well-celebrated in medical circles as the best hair transplantation practice. With DHI, hair follicles are transplanted under the scalp using a CHOI needle that simultaneously opens the hair canal and pushes the extracted follicles under the skin while allowing them to stay there for a long time and mature to grow strong and healthy.

Robotic Hair Surgery: This method relies entirely on a robot to conduct the operation, i.e., to extract the hair follicles and widen the skin pores. Yet, the implantation procedure is done manually.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): This method involves harvesting follicles from the donor area one by one using a micromotor and transplanting it in the affected area. The FUE is widespread in Turkey and well preferred by Turkish aesthetic surgeons because it is less painful and doesn’t leave scars as in the case of the FUT technique.

Sapphire FUE Hair Transplant: The sapphire transplant approach is most famous for the sapphire tip pen used to make micro canals to implant hair follicles. This highly recognized tool is known to help make super-precise incisions and is proven to reduce crusting around surgically induced cuts.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): Using the FUT technique, the medical expert takes a patch of tissue from the harvesting area and removes definite groups of hair units to be transplanted.

The FUT is not practised frequently anymore in Turkey due to the inconveniences it causes, and it is also considered outdated.

Hair implant surgery in Turkey explained: The steps

The hair implant surgery usually takes from six to nine hours to take place. Standard procedure is typically executed in four stages.

    Consulting with the doctor
    Extracting and preserving the follicles
    Making incisions
    Implanting hair follicles

A day before the procedure, the patient is expected to meet with the surgeon to discuss the number of hair follicles that should be extracted, their placement and proximity. During pre-op consultation, the doctor clarifies the entire process and foreseeable results, in addition to answering inquiries.

Afterward, the patient undergoes a detailed examination of the condition of his/her scalp, along with taking blood samples and scrutinising his/her medical history.

Once the patient receives local anaesthesia, the surgeon starts extracting hair from the donor area using specific tools and then preserves them in a special medical solution until later.

Afterward, a process of enlarging hair pores or canals is initiated while focusing on the natural direction of hair growth and the potential thickness of newly grown follicles in the future.

At this stage, multiple tiny incisions are made to receive the harvested hair implants. The breadth and depth of these minuscule cuts are extremely important and can influence the results of the surgery substantially.

After determining a suitable implantation technique, the doctor starts to insert the grafts into the incisions, typically using tweezers. Hence, ultra-micro-grafts (containing a single hair unit) are usually transplanted in the hairline of the forehead to secure a natural look, while bigger grafts (2 to 3 hairs) are placed in the middle of the scalp.

What to expect during the post-operative phase?

After finishing the surgery and placing the necessary bandages to avoid infections, the post-operative phase starts. Recovery is expected to kick in soon but gradually.

Most hair implant surgeries do not necessitate admitting the patient, which means that the recipient of the procedure is supposed to go home and recover in the comfort of his/her usual surroundings. As such, there is a set of expected stages that patients go through (depending on the nature of the implant and the physiological state of each person). Here is a chronologically organised, approximate set of recovery chapters:

    Day one. Removing the bandages

Day two. The patient’s hair should be washed gently (a habit that should be maintained from 7 to 10 days after the procedure). This step may cause minor feelings of discomfort and numbness in the scalp area.

Day three to four. The patient is expected to experience partial swelling in the forehead area, around the eyes, and on the upper area of the cheek. At this stage, swelling is not to be considered a health complication but rather a normal side effect that will disappear in no time.

Day seven to ten. With the end of the first week, the hair grafts are well inserted now, and the pain is completely gone. Now the patient can use regular shampoo to clean the area gently.

Week two to four. The patient notices that hair follicles start to fall off.

Month one to three. At this point, the patient may see cysts growing in the implant area, which is an indication that hair follicles are working up the process of growing.

Month three. The growing process kicks in.

Month six to nine. The growth becomes visible.

Month 12. The patient sees the final result of grown hair follicles in the head area.

Month 18. The patient perceives the full result of the implant on top of the scalp (the crown area).
